How to Create a Two-Step Opt-In

A two-step opt-in collects a visitor’s name and email address before asking them to select a webinar date and time. This is created with the Lead Registration embedded widget.

The first step contains the visitor’s name and email fields. The following steps display webinar time selection and any additional fields enabled for the webinar. An SMS opt-in step may also appear when SMS reminders are enabled.

Step-by-Step Configuration Instructions

Step 1: Open the Webinar Editor

  1. Navigate to My Webinars.
  2. Select the webinar where you want to add the two-step opt-in.
  3. Open the webinar customization editor.

Step 2: Open Embedded Widgets

  1. Navigate to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets.
  2. Expand Embedded Widgets if the section is collapsed.
  3. In the widget-type selector, select Lead Registration.

The available widget types include Registration, Lead Registration, Countdown, Countdown + Date & Time, and Date & Time only.

  1. Select the layout family you want to use. The available layout groups are Styled Layouts and Simple Layouts.

Step 3: Preview the Widget

  1. Review the available layout card.
  2. Click Preview to open the widget in a new tab.
  3. Confirm that the first step contains the Name and Email Address fields.
  4. Continue through the remaining steps and confirm that the webinar time selector and any additional required fields appear correctly.
  5. If SMS reminders are enabled, complete the separate SMS step when it appears.

Step 4: Copy the Embed Code

  1. Return to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets.
  2. Click Copy Embed Code for the layout you want to use.
  3. Confirm that the button changes to Copied! or that a copy confirmation appears.

Step 5: Add the Widget to Your External Page

  1. Open the page where you want to place the form in your page builder.
  2. Add an HTML, Custom HTML, or equivalent code element.
  3. Paste the copied embed code.
  4. Save and publish the page.

The generated code places the widget inside an iframe-based wrapper. The Lead Registration widget uses a default wrapper height of 400 pixels. If the widget is clipped, increase or override the height of the generated wrapper in the embed code or page builder.

Step 6: Customize the Widget

Return to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets to customize the widget settings.

Field Purpose
Modal Header Heading displayed above the form.
Modal Description Supporting text displayed below the heading.
Modal Footnote Additional text displayed below the form.
Modal Footer Footer text displayed in the widget.
Next Button Text Button text used to move from contact details to the next step.
Submit Button Text Button text used to submit the registration.
Days Label Label used for a day value where applicable.
Hours Label Label used for an hour value where applicable.
Minutes Label Label used for a minute value where applicable.
Seconds Label Label used for a second value where applicable.
Thank You Message Confirmation displayed after successful registration.
Registration Viewing Pixel Pixel used to track visits to a page containing an embedded registration widget.
CSS File Upload Optional CSS file for customizing the selected embed layout. CSS files can be up to 1 MB.

The countdown labels apply to widget types that display countdown information and may not affect the Lead Registration layout.

To track visits to the external page, copy the Registration Viewing Pixel and add it separately to the page. Copying the widget embed code does not automatically add this pixel.

Step 7: Save the Webinar

  1. Use the save action displayed in the editor footer:
    • Click Save & Continue when moving between editor tabs.
    • Click Update Webinar when editing an existing webinar from the final tab.
    • Click Create Webinar when creating a new webinar from the final tab.
    • Click Save to draft if you are not ready to publish the webinar.
  2. Republish the external page if you changed the embed code or page-builder content.

Additional Help Topics

Prerequisites and Upstream Requirements

Before you begin:

  1. Create or open the webinar where you want to use the two-step opt-in.
  2. For a scheduled webinar, make sure at least one upcoming webinar time is available.
  3. Confirm that the webinar is not configured as a Public Webinar. Embedded Widgets are unavailable for public webinars.
  4. Prepare the external page where the form will appear. The page builder must support a custom HTML/code block or an equivalent iframe element.
  5. If incomplete opt-ins should be sent to a connected marketing platform, configure the They show interest plugin event before testing the form.

Verification Gateway

Use a test email address and complete the workflow from the published page:

  1. Open the published page in an incognito or private browser window.
  2. Confirm that the Lead Registration widget loads without an error.
  3. Enter a test name and email address.
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. Confirm that the next displayed step contains the available webinar time options.
  6. Complete any additional required fields.
  7. Complete the SMS step if SMS reminders are enabled.
  8. Select a webinar time and click Submit.
  9. Confirm that the configured Thank You Message appears. The default confirmation states that the visitor successfully registered and should check their email.
  10. Confirm that the test contact appears as a webinar registrant.
  11. Confirm that the registration confirmation email is received.
  12. If a They show interest automation is configured, repeat the test by entering the name and email address and then leaving before completing registration. Confirm that the connected automation receives the lead event, while the contact is not treated as a completed webinar registration.

Common Issues & Solutions

Symptom Root Cause Resolution
Embedded Widgets is disabled or Lead Registration is unavailable. The webinar is configured as a Public Webinar. 1. Navigate to Registration > Registration Page Types. 2. Change the webinar to a registration-enabled option. 3. Save the webinar. 4. Return to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets.
The next step has no webinar times, or the submit control is disabled. No suitable upcoming webinar time is available, or the available times have passed. 1. Navigate to Scheduling. 2. Add or correct an upcoming webinar time. 3. Save the schedule. 4. Reload the external page and test again.
The first step displays fields other than Name and Email. Additional fields may be displayed in later steps based on the webinar’s registration settings. Confirm that the first step contains Name and Email. Complete the remaining displayed steps, including any custom, GDPR, or SMS fields.
Updated widget text does not appear. The text was changed in the standard registration settings instead of the Embedded Widgets settings. 1. Navigate to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets. 2. Update the relevant widget field. 3. Save the webinar. 4. Republish or refresh the external page.
A visitor enters their contact details but is not listed as a webinar registrant. The visitor left before selecting a webinar time and submitting the form. Ask the visitor to complete all displayed steps and submit a webinar time. For incomplete opt-in follow-up, verify the They show interest plugin event.
The widget appears clipped or only part of the form is visible. The generated iframe wrapper is shorter than the widget content. 1. Open the embed code. 2. Increase or override the wrapper height, which is 400 pixels by default for Lead Registration. 3. Save and republish the external page.
The page shows a blank area instead of the widget. The embed code was pasted into an element that does not execute HTML or iframe content. 1. Replace the element with an HTML or Custom HTML block. 2. Paste the embed code again. 3. Save and publish the page. 4. Test the live page instead of the page-builder editor preview.
Copy Embed Code does not work. Clipboard access may be blocked by the browser, or the copy action may have failed. Allow clipboard access for the page, refresh the editor, and try again. If the problem continues, contact support with the webinar URL and the affected browser.
Page visits are not appearing in tracking data. The Registration Viewing Pixel was not added to the external page. 1. Navigate to Advance setup > Embedded Widgets. 2. Copy the Registration Viewing Pixel. 3. Add it separately to the external page. 4. Save and republish the page.
